But I am not sure what I prefer - something as tedious as this year or a cringefest like the previous year's.

Sometimes, I feel like I am a traditionalist. I like huge opening numbers, and then short quips inbetween. I suppose that's why Billy Crystal is my favourite host.

I thought Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin would provide some serious edge this year, but alas, they could not even deliver their lines properly.

I was happy about quite a few of the choices, but these shows - as television entertainment - require more than that, no? They require Oscar moments. You know you're in trouble when the next morning the watercooler conversation is about the best documentary short winners.Ali Arikanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02293558856795196349noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6143866771442228551.post-16766593695270095062010-03-08T15:31:35.311+02:002010-03-08T15:31:35.311+02:00Nice job on these, Ali. I'm thinking "Debbie Does Dallas." Ha!

* OK, I'm sorry, I was wrong. Some dude is doing the robot to the score from "Up." If the rest of the show were like this, we'd have something. Ha! Ha!

* Sitemeter Update: Lots of folks are googling "crazy woman oscar acceptance speech." For once, they don't mean Sally Field. That doesn't surprise me. It's unfortunate that was the most memorable moment of the first three quarters of the night. (Oh, and, "Ha!")

* That close-up on Jeff Bridges' beautiful face. Possibly the best moment of the night so far. Go Jeff! I loved that moment, too!

* Please say "The Dude Abides." I wasn't thinking that, but it would have been pretty cool, and I say that as a non-Lebowski-devotee. I read somewhere recently that Bridges says he doesn't remember any of the dialogue from that movie. At first I thought he was playing too cool for school, but after seeing him last night I'm now convinced he was telling the truth.

BTW ... He was the first award winner in years who seemed to be grateful when the music started playing. It's like he needed someone to yell "Cut!" so he'd know when the scene was over.Jason Bellamyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18150199580478147196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6143866771442228551.post-23684653959767323122010-03-08T09:37:56.618+02:002010-03-08T09:37:56.618+02:00I think it boiled down to "Avatar" or &q...I think it boiled down to "Avatar" or "the Hurt Locker" in the end, and that's not really a choice for me. Definately proof that a biopic can make a great motion picture. I've only seen the PG-rated version, however; still haven't seen the R-rated version where Mozart's wife bares her breasts to Salieri.

Did you see Foreman's most recent film, Goya's Ghosts (2006)? It's pretty bad, actually. Javier Bardhem, Stellan Skarksgard, Michael Londsdale and Natalie Portman are all just fine, and Randy Quaid does a nice tongue-in-cheek impression of the French king, but the performances are the only true good thing about the movie. The screenplay has a messy narrative, and the Inquisition torture sequences seem like they're thrown in more for entertainment value than for powerful dramatic effect. And what is the movie about? Portman's long-lost daughter or Goya's paintings?

At any rate, I hear Foreman is planning a new film about Neville Chamberlain and the Munich Peace Conference. He does have an obsessive, almost pathological, hatred of everything that Pixar does, doesn't he?

The way he champions an unpopular film by pitting it against a popular one is stupid, but he doesn't do it often. I think it is his prose that is the biggest problem these days.

He is infuriating, sure, but he has a distinct voice. He is not my favourite critic, he is not even in the top ten (which, incidentally, consists of Ebert, Emerson, Uhlich, Seitz, Cozzalio, and Copeland, among others), but I do prefer the way he looks at film to quite a lot of other, rather pedestrian, critics.

That doesn't mean I agree with him, though.
